We'll take you across the mighty Mississippi through eleven states-past wheat fields and ranches, missions and pueblos, mountains and deserts. Carving through curving canyon passages only a few feet wider than the train itself, you'll see spectacular landscapes and pristine vistas not visible from interstate highways. Experience history, natural beauty and a crossing of the Continental Divide on this once in a lifetime rail adventure.

Day 1: Chicago & Amtrak Southwest Chief Depending on when you arrive, there may be just enough time for a stroll around Chicago ahead of this afternoon's (2.45pm) welcome meeting at the Metropolitan Lounge at Union Station. Departure time is half an hour later and as you recline in your coach seat or make the most of the extra room by upgrading to a sleeper car, your Wild West adventure will begin as the Southwest Chief leaves the Windy City and heads for Flagstaff, Arizona. Accommodation: On Board Amtrak - Coach seating included, upgrades to Roomette & Bedroom available I Dinner included


Day 2: Amtrak Southwest Chief & Flagstaff Pass through six different states and an exceptional array of landscapes as New Mexico turns to Arizona en route to Flagstaff. This is the same route that was once taken by the early pioneers as they headed way out west. By following the Santa Fe Trail you'll discover what a beautiful, yet hazardous undertaking this must have been. Your scheduled arrival in Flagstaff is just before 9pm so you'll have just enough time to check in and make the most of your hotel's facilities prior to hitting the hay in readiness for tomorrow's visit to the Grand Canyon. Day 3: Grand Canyon National Park The Grand Canyon has to be seen to be believed and images of the Colorado River, the Painted Desert and the Kaibab National Forest will no doubt stay in your mind's eye for many years to come. As you'll be travelling by deluxe motor coach you'll be able to get out and see the awesome landmarks of the Grand Canyon from numerous different perspectives and by listening to your knowledgeable guide you'll be treated to a thoroughly absorbing history and geology lesson like no other. Day 4: Las Vegas Travel by deluxe motor coach to the shimmering lights of Vegas and the Hotel Monte Carlo. If you thought the Grand Canyon had plenty of jaw-dropping moments then wait until you see Las Vegas. From the famous Las Vegas Strip to the fountains of the Bellagio, this is indeed one of the hottest cities on earth. World-famous acts, such as Cirque du Soleil and David Copperfield provide plenty of enthralling entertainment and taking in a show whilst you're here is definitely recommended. Dine out at one of the thousands of restaurants designed for all tastes and budgets. Accommodation: Hotel Monte Carlo I Breakfast included


Day 5: Las Vegas This morning's world-famous hotel tour will no doubt raise a few eyebrows and after an afternoon at leisure you'll be able to discover plenty more twinkling stars under the $70m tunnel of lights that encapsulates the Fremont Street Experience. With plenty of free time to shop, explore or simply laze by the pool this afternoon is yours to do with as you please - just don't forget to get home in time for tomorrow morning's departure to Merced. Day 6: Bakersfield to Merced ( San Joaquin double-decker train ) Head for Bakersfield and board the double decker San Joaquin train to Merced, arriving just in time for your evening meal at the Branding Iron where you will see a monumental display of over 200 cattle brands and the 50 year old neon sign of a cowboy branding a cow which has become somewhat of an historical landmark. Then it's time to get your head down and rest up for your expedition into Yosemite which will no doubt be the major talking point around the table at tomorrow's dinner. Day 7: Yosemite National Park & Sacramento Board your deluxe coach after breakfast and venture into Yosemite National Park where you'll pass by landmarks, such as El Capitan, Bridalveil Falls and Half Dome, en-route to your scenic lunch spot. This afternoon promises a narrated tour of Yosemite where you'll get to discover both the amazing natural beauty and the long-standing Native American heritage that is held within the park's far-reaching boundaries. After the guided tour you'll be heading onwards to the capital of California, Sacramento, whereupon you'll arrive mid-evening just in time to get settled in to what will be your home for the next couple of nights. Day 8: Sacramento Sacramento is a blend of historic sites and modern malls which allows for as many chances for retail therapy as it does for discovering the city's Gold Rush heritage. Your time in Sacramento is yours to spend as you wish but anyone interested in the history of trains will find themselves in their absolute element at the California State Railroad Museum with its 21 restored locomotives. With a thriving food, art and nightlife scene there really is a city full of contrasts. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza I Breakfast included


Day 9: San Francisco Arrive in San Francisco for lunch just ahead of this afternoon's sightseeing tour, which features Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Jackson Square and Telegraph Hill. This is such a beautiful city and as you'll be located right in the historic heart of Fisherman's Wharf you'll find a wide range of attractions and seafood restaurants right on your doorstep. Day 10: San Francisco & Muir Woods Discover the 250ft tall Redwoods of Muir Woods, a beautiful forest named after the Scottish/American naturalist who played a huge role in the protection and perseveration of America's wilderness. Then it is back to San Francisco via the Mediterranean-style village of Sausalito. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf I Breakfast included


Day 11: Amtrak's California Zephyr to Elko Climb aboard the California Zephyr bound for Elko, Nevada, aka `the Best Small Town in America'. This is an excellent day's travelling and a trip to the Sightseer Lounge presents a fabulous display of ever-changing scenery as you pass through the lush green hills and palm forests of California and enter the more desolate lands of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Day 12: Salt Lake City & Price, Utah Enjoy a guided tour of Salt Lake City's highlights, taking in the Mormon Temple and the magnificent Tabernacle building, this vibrant destination combines the buzz of a large city with the friendliness of a quaint mountain town. Enjoy your time in Salt Lake before transferring to Price, Utah. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Price I Breakfast included


Day 13: Amtrak's California Zephyr to Colorado Rockies Back on-board the California Zephyr you're bound for the Windy City with an incredible array of Rocky Mountain scenery in between. Encounter the famous five-mile long Moffat Tunnel and literally go under the Continental Divide, before passing through Denver. Accommodation: On Board Amtrak - Coach seating included, upgrades to Roomette & Bedroom available I Breakfast, lunch and dinner included


Day 14: Chicago Make the final stretch on the Zephyr through Iowa and Illinois before returning to Chicago in the mid-afternoon. Another night in Chicago is strongly advised to ensure you make any onward bound connections or to see more of this exciting city. Window shop down Magnificent Mile or explore the wonderful array of public art that is displayed in Millennium Park, before treating yourself to the ultimate Deep Dish Pizza.
